Circumstances do not define us; How we respond to them do.

Very recently, I came across this article of Mr. Ang Jun Heng, who had his fingers slashed by assailants in Singapore 2010. He lost 4 fingers in the freak accident, which dashed his dreams of becoming a pilot.

8 years on, Jun Heng has since progressed, graduating from school in the University of Virginia, and is a senior consultant in New York, aspiring / learning how to rock climb.

I was really encouraged by this story. If this story does not inspire you, I don’t know what will.

Many a time, circumstances, triumphs and setbacks will come our way. However, what I believe Jun Heng saw was not to dwell in the circumstances that happened, to forgive his assailants, and move on. In his words:

“I have never borne any grudge against my assailants,” he said.

“All I felt was regret; I regret that one of the victims lost his life, widowing his wife and orphaning his children; I regret that the other victims could no longer use their hands and do the work they came here to do; I regret that the assailants made a mistake and now have to pay a heavy price for it.”

Circumstances do not define us; How we respond to them, do.
